Take your own path
Our primitive animal brain wants us to survive this moment. Period. And it takes this role very seriously. It probably sounds like this:
- “Let’s eat all the food we can—who knows when we’ll be able to eat again.”
- “This heartache hurts so badly. Let’s eat to make it go away.”
- “Everyone else is eating. Let’s eat too so we look normal.”
Here’s the good news: We’re still alive in this moment.
Here’s the bad news: We’ve got no plan for the next one.
To plan beyond one moment at a time, you’ll need to call on your evolved, primate brain. It’s the part of the brain that can sound like this:
- “I don’t have to eat everything because the moment I get hungry, I promise to feed myself again.”
- “I know this heartache really hurts and I’m going to take care of myself the best I can.”
- “Everyone else is eating but I’m not hungry, and, in my books, it’s not normal to eat when you’re not hungry.”
Plan to feed yourself nourishing food. Plan to hold yourself while you hurt. Plan to stand your ground and define your own normal.
Take your own path.
It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
You’ll change the way you live your life. You’ll move from vigilance to vision, from pain to passion, from fear to freedom.
